3pt Canadian Seatbelt VFAQ

Removal of US belts

Remove the front A-pillar speaker grille at the base of the windshield (1 P)

Remove the rear seat by lifting up on the two handles on the base of each seat.

Remove the scuff trim on the door (4P).

Remove the rear quarter trim panel. There are 5 pop panel fasteners, 3 under the rear window and 2 where the fold-down rear seat latches, two phillips screws in the floor, and one push fastener near the bottom middle.

Remove the center pillar trim. There are 3 fasteners - 1P holding the clothing hook in, 1 pop on the inside of the door, and 1 push.

Pop off the outer A-pillar trim and remove the inner trim (all pop).

Disconnect the 2 white electrical connectors going to the seatbelt motor.

Disconnect the Auto belt control unit and remove (2-10mm) (driver's side only).

Unbolt the motor (3-10mm, 3-P) and track (2-12mm, 3-10mm) and remove.

Carefully move the carpet back to expose the lap belt retractor assy and remove (2-17mm, 2-12mm).

Installation of 3pt Canadian belts

Install manual seatbelt retractor assembly into the provided opening, making sure that the tab is inserted properly and 17mm bolt is tight.

Install the new Canada-spec A-pillar if so desired (optional).

Install the new Canada-spec center pillar trim and clothes hook, then install the upper seat belt anchor through the supplied hole.

Install the lower seatbelt mounting bracket into the 2-17mm bolt holes formerly occupied by the Lap belt retractor assy.  Make sure that the seatbelt is threaded through the carpet hole before bolting down and that the bracket loop is facing forwards.

Make sure that the seatbelt operates properly, smoothly, and locks under a quick pull (like in an accident!) before continuing.  A poorly operating seatbelt should not be installed (common sense).

Reverse Removal steps for installation of the rear quarter trim panel, scuff panel, and speaker cover.

Repeat Removal and Installation steps for the Passenger side.

Removal of US center console upper belts (optional).

Remove the 12mm bolts holding the seatbelt bracket (one each side).

Remove the P screws from under the cupholder (2), ashtray (1), rear storage pocket (2), and console-to-radio trim (3).

Carefully move the console aside.  Remove the 2 white electrical connectors to the back of the assy.

Thread the seat belts, brackets, and console covers through the console holes to free up the seat belt assy.

Remove the 1-12mm bolt in the floor and the 2-17mm bolts on the side (not in the floor) of the belt retractor assy and remove from the car.

Reinstall the 12mm hold-down bolt back into it's original hole (goes through floorpan).

Reinstall console as in step #2.

Finish

VIOLA! You now have 3pt seatbelts instead of the Big Brother mandated automatic strangulators.

    For the record:
The legality of this is debatable, and there is a distinct possibility that IF the insurance company finds out, they can refuse to pay a claim.  Standard disclaimers apply.

    Canadian part #s:

      A-Pillar        B-Pillar
Light Grey LH  MB747428   Light Grey LH  MB747430
Light Grey RHMB747429   Light Grey RHMB747431
        Grey LHMB722499   Grey LHMB722503
        Grey RHMB722501   Grey RHMB722505
        Beige LHMB722500   Beige LHMB722504
        Beige RHMB722502   Beige RHMB722506

Now for the real problem - evidently these parts have been discontinued, so you'll have to hope you find a Jeep/Eagle or Mitsu dealer in Canada that has them in stock. If you can't find them at a dealer, you're going to have to join the Canada DSM site/list and see if one of them can find the parts for you in a junkyard and ship them to you (which is what I did a few years back).
