SSSS - Stainless Steel ScatterShield

This is the SSSS made by Harry Blanchard and sold through DSS, Mach V, and Buschur Racing.

Note: I installed the bolts from the rear forward, but you may find it easier to install from the front to back.

Note: I have installed this scattershield twice, but in both cases, I installed it on the tranny, then threw the tranny in during a clutch/tranny swap. I have no idea how many parts you'll have to remove from the car in order to install it on a tranny already in the car, so don't ask ;-)

Placed on the tranny without the support bracket bolted on.

The rear bolt - this bolt is included with the SSSS, and goes through an unused hole in the bellhousing (note the starter mount bolt hole just forward of this bolt). Spin the nut on just a couple of turns, just enough to keep it from falling off. Then go to the front bolt.

This is the front bolt near the clutch slave cylinder. Get this bolt started a few turns into the block, then get the top bolts started. You may need to push the SSSS around a bit to get this one started.

The top 2 mounting bolts, shown above the shifter cable bracket. The SSSS may slightly interfere with the water pipe above it on the car, if it does, slightly bend the water pipe upwards a bit (it wasn't a problem on my car). You may want to remove the sliding water pipe mount from the pipe to make sure it can never get caught between the tranny and block during a clutch job, as the mount can no longer be used.

Once you have the front and rear bolts loosely installed, push the SSSS towards the block, and get the top 2 bolts started.

Here it is placed on the tranny, with the support bracket loosely bolted in place. The bottom bolt for the support bracket is one of the tranny bolts that holds the bellhousing to the center case.

Note: while it is possible to bolt the top bolts into place with the bracket unmodified and the shifter cables bolted to the tranny, it makes the job more difficult. I modified the bracket, cutting out the center, as shown below. It is probably easier to unbolt the shifter cables from their mount to access the top bolt for this bracket.

Another view. Get the bottom bellhousing bolt into the tranny a few turns (if you are installing it with the tranny in the car, remove the 2 tranny mount bolts from the tranny (and if you have a 90, remove the cruise control motor and bracket, as it bolts to the tranny mount), then lift the tranny mount up, and you can access the bellhousing bolt through the fenderwell with the fenderwell cover removed. It will make bolting it down a lot easier), then get the top bracket bolts started. Once all bolts on the SSSS are started, you can tighten them all down - get the main scattershield tight, then tighten the support bracket.

    Front view.

Top view. The bracket bolts are 12pt 10mm heads, so either get a 12pt 10mm socket, or use a boxend wrench. The nuts for these bolts are 14mm, and can be accessed with a ratchet/socket if you contort your hands enough.

    Rear view.

Here's the mod I made to the support bracket. I haven't reinstalled it yet, so I don't know if cutting it out like this will help, but it seems like it will, and it looks cool ;-)
