1G Cooling Fan Relay Bypass Mod

Several people have told me that their AC turns on when you turn the switch on, and run the fans. I'm going to look into this, and see if I can get it to bypass the A/C. When I did this mod on my car, I didn't have an AC compressor installed. Now that I have the compressor installed, I can figure out how to turn the fans on without the AC turning on.

Like the 2G cooling fan relay mod, this has the same function. For 1G's, it's actually easier and does not require a jumper wire between the two fan motors. The condenser fan motor relay on 1G's will turn both fans ON. It's been setup like this from the factory, so there's no need for a jumper wire... like the 2G mod.

For more information about this modification, the 2G Cooling Fan Relay Bypass Mod can be viewed at: 2gcoolingfan.html

Before you begin, I'd suggest pulling the negative battery cable... to prevent frying components, or yourself.

The relay you'll be connecting the switch to is located under the hood, in the driver's side "fuse box" shown in the picture (circled in blue).

The relay is round, silver, and should be the one in the middle. On the fuse box cover, it's labeled:"A/C COND. FAN".

Take the cover off the fuse box. Looking in the fuse box from the driver's side front fender, you should see 2 round, silver metal relays. The relay you want is the one on the left.

Remove the relay. There will be 4 terminals in the relay socket, which the relay connects to.

The switch will be connected to terminals 1 and 3.

The relay has a small diagram on it, which shows the terminal numbers on it. It should help you if you are unsure which terminals are 1 and 3. The diagram looks something like the following drawing:

Connect one wire to terminal #1 in the relay socket, and another wire to terminal #3 in the relay socket.

The easiest way to do this is just put the stripped end of the wires down in the terminals, and carefully insert the relay. The relay should hold the wires in place. It may take a little pressure to get the relay all the way back into place, due to the wires that you've just inserted into the terminals. The wires take up some of the space that the relay needs to slide back into the terminals. Do not force them. If you can't get the relay into place with moderate pressure, remove the relay, and spread the wire ends so they lay flatter against the jacks, then try again.

Route the 2 wires through the firewall, and then to where the switch will be located.

Connect the wires to the switch.

When the switch is flipped to the ON position, both fans should turn ON. If they don't, check the wires, to make sure they are properly connected to the relay socket.

Don't forget to turn the toggle switch OFF whenever you turn off the car and no longer want the fans running. If the toggle switch is left in the ON position, the fans will continue to run, even if you don't have the engine running.

In the future, there may also be info about wiring the switch to turn on only when the ignition is on.
