APEXi AFC Installation on 2G

Many have complained that some APEXi AFC (Air-Fuel Converter) kits come with instructions written in Japanese. Well, if you own a 2G and you've run into this problem, have no fear. Here's the English version.

White wire on AFC = airflow signal input from MAS to AFC

Yellow wire on AFC = airflow signal output from AFC to the car's ECU

Green wire on AFC = engine RPM signal

Black wire on AFC = ground (must be the same ground that is used to

ground the ECU to the car)

Red wire on AFC = main power to AFC unit

Blue wire on AFC is for twin turbo only. Insulate it.

1. Disconnect the car's negative battery cable.

2. Remove the access panel from the driver's side of the center console (one steel screw and one plastic screw).

3. Maneuver your head under the steering column so that your left ear is pointing to the floor and your eyes are looking at the ECU box (which is inside the console). The following steps assume that you are positioned in this way, for ease of explanation.

4. You'll see that there are four plastic connectors which attach many wires to the ECU.

5. The left most connector has 26 terminals, the next from the left has 16 terminals, the next has 12 terminals, and the furthest connector to the right has 22 terminals. You should also look at page 17 of your AFC installation manual, if you have one -- Mitsubishi ECU M1 (the drawing on the top left hand corner of that page).

6. The terminals are numbered as follows (don't look for these numbers in your car, they're not there, these numbers are obtained via review of a 2G DSM shop manual):

On the far left connector, top row is 1 through 13 and bottom row is 14 through 26.

On the second connector from the left, top row is 31-38 and bottom row is 39-46.

On the third connector from the left, top row is 51-56 and bottom row is 57-62.

On the far right connector, top row is 71-81 and bottom row is 82-92.

Here's a picture of the ECU terminal numbers. A picture is worth at least a thousand words.

7. Cut the wire at terminal 90 in half (terminal 90 is the airflow signal from the MAS to the ECU). Attach the lower end of the cut to the white AFC wire. Connect the upper end of the cut to the yellow AFC wire.

(You may have a yellow Y-shaped splitter with your AFC kit. It's not used on DSM installations.)

8. Tee the green wire from the AFC onto the wire at terminal 58 (rpm signal wire).

9. Tee the red wire from the AFC onto the wire at terminal 25 (power supply wire for ECU).

10. Tee the black wire from the AFC onto the wire at terminal 92 (ECU ground wire).

11. Set the CAR SELECT setting on the AFC unit to 0.

12. Set the 8 dip switches on the AFC unit to the following: down, down, up, up, up, down, up, down

13. Ensure all connections are tightly made up and are well insulated.

14. Connect the AFC wiring harness to the AFC unit.

15. Re-install the access panel on the center console.

16. Re-attach the car's negative battery cable.

17. Set all 5 control knobs on the AFC unit to zero adjustment (straight up).

Done. Now you're ready to start up the car and adjust the A/F ratio vs. RPM curve to your liking. You *do* have a reliable air-fuel gage installed on your car, right? If not, don't touch those control knobs!
