This mod allows your fog lights to be turned on anytime you
want, but they still don't work with high beams. Because they can
be turned on anytime, there is the risk of leaving them on during
the day and running down your battery, so an indicator light is
part of the mod.
Hardware you will need:
2 quick-disconnect connectors, 1 butt connector, a 3/16"
ring terminal (all these are 18 - 22 size and should be of the
insulated variety), a 12-volt LED with holder and built-in
resistor - Radio Shack part# 276-084A, and a few feet of 18 or 20
gauge wire.
Tools you will need:
medium blade-type and Phillips screwdrivers, wire
cutter/stripper/crimper, a 3/16" drill bit, and needle-nose
pliers. A fine-tooth saw is optional.
Here is how I did it:
- Remove the padded knee panel below the steering wheel.
- Use a blade screwdriver to remove the 2 small
covers at the top at either end of the knee
panel. They pop out but be careful not to break
them.
- Remove the screws at these locations as well as
the ones at the lower corners of the knee panel,
under the dash.
- Remove the air-conditioner duct that dumps air in your
lap. There is just one screw and the duct unplugs from
another duct.
You should now be able to access connector number C-06 which
is a wide white connector with 20 pins just above and behind the
lap duct.
- Pull it away from the other wire bundles coming from the
steering column.
- Press the latch, which is under the foam-rubber pad that
wraps around the connector, and pull the connector halves
apart.

On the steering wheel side of C-06 (female) we are going to
connect the black wire in position #6 to the yellow wire in
position #14 so that the fog light switch has power all the time.
The #6 wire comes from the column light switch and is common to
the "off" and "park" column switch positions.
The #14 wire goes to the fog light switch. The firewall side of
C-06 (male) has no wire in position #6.
- Cut #6 and #14 wires about 3/4 inch away from the
steering wheel side connector.
There isn't much slack in the wires so be careful.
- Strip about 1/4" of insulation off of all the cut
ends.
- Crimp a butt connector to the short end of the yellow
wire (#14).
- Twist the other end of #14 and the black (#6) together
and insert into the empty end of the butt connector and
crimp it.
- Reconnect the C-06 connector halves.
If nothing blew up you are ok and you should now be able to
turn on the fog lights regardless of the column switch position.
Check it out before continuing.
- Stuff the C-06 connector back up among the other wire
bundles.
- Replace the lap duct.
- Replace the padded knee panel.
Make sure the lap duct outlet and the panel outlet are
plugged together properly.
- Pop the screw covers back on.
Now for the indicator light:
- Remove the narrow plastic trim piece between the
instrument cluster and the HVAC control panel.
Pull the top towards you and it just pops off. There are
2 screws under this trim piece.
- Remove the instrument cluster surround.
There are 4 more screws: 2 under the top lip above the
steering wheel and one at the bottom on each side of the
steering wheel.
- Pull the surround away from the dash slightly.
- Disconnect the fog light switch and the lighting rheostat
by squeezing their latches and pulling the connectors
out.
- Remove the surround and lay it face down on a pad so it
won't be damaged.
- Remove the 3 screws holding the switch assembly to the
surround and remove the switch assembly.
- Use a flat screwdriver to depress the latch and remove
the dummy plug from the switch assembly.
What we are going to do is connect one wire of the 12-volt LED
to the red wire in position #2 of the fog light switch connector
and the other LED wire to ground. When the fog light switch is
turned on, the LED will be lit.

You will have to apply power to the LED to determine which
wire to connect to the switch and which to connect to ground. It
does make a difference. Just reverse the connections if the LED
doesn't light when the fog light switch is turned on.
The dummy plug is just that. It fills the position occupied by
the head-light pop-up switch on the '90 and '91 T/E/Ls.
- Cut off about 3/4in of the back of the dummy plug using a
fine-tooth saw.
Just don't cut the latch part off. This will let us
attach the LED easier. The dummy plug is a $3.50 item
from your friendly dealer, so you can replace it easily
if necessary. I bought one just in case.
- Mark the center on the front of the dummy plug.
- Drill a 3/16" hole through the dummy plug.
Enlarge it just enough for the Led to fit all the way
through from the front. Use a small round file or knife
blade.
- Insert the LED and put the nut on the back.
Tighten it with needle-nose pliers, but not too tight
because everything is plastic.
- For the ground, crimp a ring connector to one end of a
suitable length of wire, depending on where you choose to
ground the LED, and the female part of a quick-disconnect
to the other.
- Attach the ring-end to a convenient ground point.
I used a screw behind the gauge cluster, but you might
not want to remove the cluster just for this, although it
is no big deal. I have done it a few times replacing
gauge faces.
- Crimp the male end of a quick-disconnect to both of the
LED wires.
- Cut a length of wire 4in - 6in and crimp the female end
of a quick-disconnect on one end and strip about
1/4" of insulation from the other end.
- Attach the stripped end of this wire to the red wire at
pin #2 of the fog light switch connector.
You can cut the wires and use a butt connector OR
you can remove the red wire from the connector and attach
it there. I did it this way and it worked well. To
remove the red wire:
- Use a miniature screwdriver and press the latch
for wire #2 from the front of the connector.
- Pull the wire out the back of the connector.
- Slide the stripped end of the 4" - 6"
wire into the male contact of red wire #2.
- replace the #2 wire in the fog light switch
connector.
This will trap your wire in the connector.
- Snap the dummy plug back into the switch assembly. It
only goes one way.
- Reattach the switch assembly to the cluster surround with
the 3 screws.
- Plug the fog light and rheostat connectors back in.
- Plug in the quick-disconnects for the LED.
- Turn on the fog lights to see if the LED lights. If it
does -
- Replace the instrument cluster surround and plastic trim
piece
Now you have fog lights you can turn on anytime AND an
indicator light to remind you that the fog lights are on. The LED
is bright enough to see well during the day, but you will get
into the habit of turning off the fog lights easily enough.
