Technical Articles : Manual Transmission Position Sensor This explanation was provided by Chad Merritt. Please read the DISCLAIMER. You need to install this transmission sensor to check of the car is in gear when installing a remote starter on a 5-speed. This sensor will NOT detect WHAT gear it's in though. Just whether it's in one or not. Go to Radio Shack and get a Radio Shack Magnetic Sensor, Cat No 49-532. Cost is about $4.99 + tax. It's originally meant for use with home security systems on doors and windows, but we're going to use it elsewhere.
On the actual shifter linkage in the above picture you can see the magnet. Then, to the immediate left is the sensor itself. When ever the linkage moves, the magnet moves out of the sensor's range, and opens the circuit. The magnet just sticks to the linkage; zip tying it in place is a good idea, too. The sensor is mounted on the shifter plate on the floor off the car. Do NOT mount the sensor without adjusting it. Use a digital volt meter to run a continuity check on the tune the sensor. Tune the sensor by moving the white sensor forwards and backwards. Move it, then shift through the gears (making sure you release the shifter so that it's completely resting). Once you have it tuned, screw it down. Connect one side to a secure ground; I used the bolts holding the steering wheel assembly together. Put the other side to a remote starter control box as your neutral position senor input. Use black wire for each. Voila! You're done with the sensor. Put the boot and the shifter handle back on. |
